"A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces," a set of eight illustrations depicting famous places, was published by the same publisher, Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudo), around 1833, after Hokusai's masterpiece, "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji," was released. The works feature famous waterfalls not only in the suburbs of Edo but also in Nikko, the depths of Kiso, Suzuka Pass along the Tokaido road, Yoshino, and other regions, and the waterfalls selected are objects of worship, such as those worshipped in mountain worship or where Amida or Kannon are enshrined. Hokusai had previously created works that featured waterfalls, but "A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces" is considered the culmination of years of research into the subject of "water."
The new shirts feature five of the eight works in total: Yoshitsune's Umasarai Falls of Yoshino, Washu, Kirifuki Falls on Kurokamiyama in Shimotsuke, Oku Amida Falls on the Kisoji Road, Aoigaoka Falls in the Eastern Capital, and Yoro Falls in Mino Province.
